A Hondo okojo or stoat belongs to the class of mammals. Also called as the ermine, they also belong to the weasel family. The Japanese specie, also known as Yama-Itachi or Kuda-Gitsune, are particularly found in Honshu. The subspecie, Ezo-Stoat, are found in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan.
Hondo stoat usually eats birds’ eggs, insects, mice and rats. Due to its aggressive nature, it even attacks hares, which are almost twice as big as the stoats. An interesting fact about them is that starting from spring, when the snow melts, it has a brown fur, but as soon as summer ends, this fur becomes white.
These animals are now considered as NT or Near Threatened.
