There is new hobby growing in Japan, and it's called "moss viewing." Individuals get together in Lake Shirakoma to closely examine moss. Participants of this activity were mostly women. Moss-excursion activity started on 2011 and has became even popular in the coming years, resulting in increasing the frequency of excursion from the initial count of 5 in 2011, to 8 in 2014.
The area of Lake Shiroma is designated by the Bryological Society of Japan as a 'precious moss-covered forest.'
