Japanese lates or barramundi are known to the locals as Akame because of it's red eyes. Aka is the Japanese word for red while me is the Japanese term for eyes. The overall body color is gray, with a bluish tint.
It is a rare and shy fish that is endemic to Japan, living at the bottom of freshwater shallows and the ocean. They can be found in the waters of Tosa Bay, in Kōchi Prefecture, Shikoku and Miyazaki City in Miyazaki Prefecture. Other younger fish have also been spotted in the rivers of Ohyodo and Shimanto.
Because of its elusiveness, it is known to be a rare catch among fishermen.
