Koda Kumi rose to fame for her song Real Emotion/ 1000 no Kotoba used in the phenomenal game Final Fantasy X-2, released in 2003, three years after her debut in the music industry.

2003 is also the year when she changed her image from conservative and merely kawaii to a more daring and sexier one. She even set the trend of the ero-kakkoi style, which is a combination of ero or sexy and cool or kakkoi.

Jonathan Ross, a famous television personality, called her the Christina Aguilera of Japan.

She released almost 34 albums, including compilation albums, cover and remix albums.
