During the old times, the zoni is eaten by the samurais and warriors on the battlefield. It is usually easy to make because it is just a combination of dried and portable food and any meat that can be found within the vicinity of the area. At the present time, the soup has become a dish served with mochi rice cakes, usually as ceremeonial food on the traditional Japanese New Year celebrations. Because of this, there had also been developed a variety of zonis, depending on the area and prefecture.
