Yakiniku is the Japanese term for grilled meat, or what is popularly known in the Western world as barbecue. Yaki is the Japanese term for "grilled," while niku is the word for "meat." But unlike the normal Western barbecues, which are mostly skewered, the yakiniku are just thin slices of bite-sized meat grilled over flames of distilled carbonized charcoals. Some use gas or electric grills to cook their yakinikus.
This food has been so popular in Japan that in 1993, the All Japan Yakiniku Association had proclaimed August 29 as the official "Yakiniku Day."
