Being a rice country, Japan has actually made a lot of rice cakes during the course of its culinary history.
Uiro or uiro mochi is a kind of traditional cake made from rice flour and sugar. The cakes are steamed, which brings the best out of the rice and the sugar. The texture of the cake is chewy, because of this, it got the name uiro mochi, which is known for being a chewy cake. Several flavors and ingredients had been used by the Japaense culinary artists to innovate on this sweet dish. There is the matcha or gree tea flavor. There is also the ever famouse azuki bean paste. There is also a yuzu or citrus fruit flavor. Chestnuts has also been used so far.
