Providing lunches in schools started in Japan around the early 20th century. World War II came and famine almost caught the whole country so the Japanese government decided to re-introduce the scheme to schools. In 1954, the School Lunch Law has been reenacted and the campaign covered elementary and junior high schools.
The local term for school lunch is kyuushoku. The ingredients are grown from the backyard, and are picked everyday. The food is the same for all the students in the school. Children can only bring their own lunches when they reach high school. This way, children are taught to eat what they are served. Schools also don't have vending machines.
