Farmers in the island of Shihoku in Kagawa prefecture is proud for making for a unique product called square-shaped watermelons. There are around 200-300 cube-shaped melons that are produced annually. However, in this report by Vesti Russian channel from Japan in 2013, the number was projected to have a decline due to inadequate times of rainfall in May. This kind of fruit was made for travel and storage purposes.
But not all of these are good enough to be feed onto the people's stomachs. Upon checking of the product, some of these square watermelons aren't ripe and instead was used for ornamental plants.
