If it's Japan, there got to be something raw in it. And one of the most sought-after Japanese raw food icons is the sashimi.
Sashimi is the world-famous thinly-sliced raw seafood in Japan. Through the years, food items other than seafood, like beef, horse and deer, has been served as sashimi. There has also been tofu skin sashimi and konnyaku sashimi, made from the konjac plant.
The word sashimi came from two Japanese words. The first word is sashi, which literally mean "pierced" or "stuck." The second word is mi, which means "body meat." Putting them together, sashimi literally means "piereced meat."
