Japan is know for their sushi dishes. One of the less popular but is equally delicious sushi is the sasa sushi originating from Nagano and Niigata prefecture.
The practice of wrapping sushi with sasa or broad bamboo leaves originated in the Samurai Era. Kenshin Uesugi was the daimyo who was said to have thought of the idea of using leaves for sushi. During the samurai battles, they have no time to find plates in the battlefield so Uesugi came up with the idea of simply wrapping the sushi in leaves. This way they wouldn't be needing any plate anymore.
