Sakura Mochi is a type wagashi or Japanese confectionery made for spring. It consists of a pink-colored glutinous rice cake filled with anko or red bean paste wrapped in a cherry blossom leaf pickled in salt.
The sakura mochi has two varieties: the chomeiji, or the sakura mochi in the Kanto region and domyoji in the Kansai region. Chomeiji sakura mochi gets its name where the sakura mochi was first created which is in Chomeiji in Sumida ward. This type of sakura mochi is a flat piece like a mini pancake rolled up. The domyoji sakura mochi is made of domyoji flour, a sweet rice dried and broken into smaller pieces.
