Nikkei was a product of an cultural exchange between two countries. When Japanese farmers began migrating to Peru in the year 1899, the two countries established diplomatic ties aside from their interests of seeking land ownership. That said, these descendants abroad informally created Nikkei cuisine, a recreation of Japanese dishes using the local ingredients.
The fusion became popular worldwide during the time of Emperor Nobu Matsuhisa.
Watch as MUNCHIES flew to the Land of Incas and interact with Nikkei chefs Mitsuharu Tsumura, Toshiro Konishi, and Toshi Matsufuji, the known personalities on making this fusion cuisine even possible at present.
