Iwate Prefecture is not only rich with land, being the second largest prefecture in Japan, but also with local food you definitely cannot miss. 

Here are the must try Japanese dishes in Iwate:

1. Genghis Khan, a dish that can be found in Tōno, is basically thinly-sliced  lamb, grilled on a bucket. You dip it into the sauce which is soy sauce mixed with ginger.

2. Grilled Tofu, found at the Morioka’s famous Yoichi street night market is a slow grilled tofu smeared in miso. The miso gives the flavorless tofu a rich taste.

3. Smoked cheese, a treat that's hard to find in Japan, can be found at the Yoichi street market. The cheese has been carefully and professionally smoked by a "smoking master."

4. Jajamen, comprised of thick noodles mixed with meat and miso sauce. After you've finished about 2/3 of your meal, you may hand your plate over to the shop staff, who will then add hot water to the noodles and convert it into a soup called Chi Tantan.

5. Maesawa beef, Iwate's most famous beef, is among the top 5 cuts of beef in Japan.
