Disclaimer: the melon bread is not melon-flavored.
The melon bread, or melon-pan as it is commonly called, is a type of sweet bun common in Japan. It got its name because of the bread's resemblance to rock melon or cantaloupe. The sweetness of the melon-pan comes from the covering of crisp biscuit or cookie crust on its top. Its main selling point is the contrast of the sweet, crunchy crust with the soft texture of the bread. There are many variations to the classic melon-pan. Some bakeries include chocolate chips, matcha, custard, and even melon syrup inside the bun.
It is a snack commonly seen in mangas, animes, and dramas. It is commonly available in bakeries in Japan so better start buying before your tummy starts complaining.
