MRE or Meal ready to eat refers to foods that have been kept to last long for a year or even a decade. 
There is case of 50-year-old MREs that are still edible even up to this day.

Meal ready to eat meals has been made especially for the military or members of the armed forces. MREs are ready to eat anytime and anywhere as they are preserved through vacuum sealing. Usually, an MRE contains the typical menus of a common meal for a day: a breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
MRE packs contain the following:

1. Food packs: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
2. Hygiene pouches: Moist towelette, sanitation tablets
3. Cooking tools: Matches, Cooking stand, Self-heating packs.
