Takoyaki is a Japanese snack known to be formed in circular shapes or balls. Its main ingredients are wheat flour-based batter and an octopus (tako), either diced or minced. Aside from that, takoyaki's other ingredients are takoyaki tempura scraps (tenkasu), pickled ginger, and green onion.
With 'yaki' derived from the word 'yaku' which defines one of the cooking methods in Japanese cuisine, the term takoyaki simply means a fried or grilled octopus. Once invented by a street vendor named Tomekichi Endo in 1935, the snack gained local, national, and international popularity. Watch as this video demonstrates how takoyaki iscooked at New York's Ogtafuku x Medetai held at Lower East Side of New York City.
