Kirin Free was the idea of Namiko Kajiwara, who worked in Kirin Brewery’s Marketing Department. It was launched in April 2009, and became a surprise hit.

Kirin Free is great for people who want to join after-work get-togethers but do not want the effects of alcohol. Pregnant women can also enjoy the taste of beer and won’t get the consequences of its real counterpart. It can also help drivers drink beer without losing control of their cars.

Since the release and success of Kirin Free, competitors have also launched their own non-alcoholic beers, such as Asahi’s Point Zero and Sapporo’s Super Clear.
