Surimi is the Japanese food paste mainly made from fish or other seafood. The kamaboko is a cured surimi, wherein various white fish are pureed and flavored. The mixture is then shaped into loaves and then steamed until it attains the perfect firmness, depending on who prepares the food. The cooked surimi loaves are eaten chilled or unheated and served with a variety of dips. This has also been a favorite ingredient in a lot of other Japanese dishes like hot soups, one-dish meals, and noodle dishes. Some make kamabokos with designs, like the pink spirals on the narutomakis of Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture.
