Japan is not just about rice wines or sake. They also have their own whisky. The production of whisky in Japan is said to have started in 1870 but it was just until 1924 that it was distributed commercially. It was also during the time when the first whisky distillery was established in Japan. The Japanese whiskey has been credited to Shinjiro Torii, who used to be a pharmaceutical wholesaler in the old Japanese times. He was not satisfied then with the foreign alcoholic beverages that he hed been collecting and thus established his own distillery. He then hired a distillery expert who had studied in Scotland, Masataka Taketsuru.
