When in Japan, do as the Japanese do.
For most tourists, Japanese food is basically sushi, sashimi, ramen, tempura, takoyaki and similar versions of it. Well, there’s more to the cuisine than those popular, Instagram-able grub.
In a quieter part of the bustling Tokyo is Hashimoto, a humble eel restaurant. This unagi-ya has been serving grilled eel on rice or ‘Kabayaki’ since Edo-era. From 1835 to the 6th generation owner Shinji Hashimoto, this Michelin-starred unagi restaurant continues to serve tender, juicy eels with tare sauce, the recipe a secret passed down to family from generation to generation.
Hashimoto is one of the cheapest restaurants serving Michelin-starred meal in Tokyo.
