Have you seen all of those food displayed outside restaurants in Japan? Yes they all look sumptuous but they are not edible. These are called the "sampuru" or samples. And it is amazing to discover that the food sample business in Japan has evolved from being just copies of food to being a complete institution.
So how do they create these lovely fake food samples? The craftsmen first create some mold from the original food. What they do is that they request the client to ship in a frozen version of the food to their workshop. The molds are then filled with PVC plastics baked, and then colored to perfection.
