Hayashi rice is a Japanese dish with a mix of Western and Eastern food influences. Hayashi rice is a beef stew with a rich and creamy demi-glace sauce. This kind of sauce is actually of French origin. Also known as hashed beef rice, the hayashi rice is said to come from the mining town of Ikuno in Hyogo Prefecture. In 1868, a French engineer worked in the said mines and was served the hayashi rice. He incorporated the French demi-glace sauce in the dish. He even enhanced the taste more with red wine.
