Disposable chopsticks are made to be put to trash after use. But Marushige Confectionery made a more economical and earth-friendly way of using chopsticks.
Introducing the chopsticks made from igusa, or the weeds used in making tatami mats. This being said, the chopsticks are hard enough to hold food. But upon closer inspections, these chopsticks are also not as hard as wood and are kind to one's teeth. In fact, these chopsticks are actually edible, and tastes like, yes, tatami. After eating, one can just consume the chopsticks, to lessen the wastes of the world. According to the video, one pair of tatami chopsticks has an average daily nutrition allowance equivalent to one serving of salad.
Marushige has two restaurants wherein guests can try these tatami chopsticks. One is Casa Afeliz Ginza, located in the Ginza gCUBE building in Tokyo. The other is Umato, located in Shimbashi Plaza Building in Minato, Tokyo.
