Donburi is the umbrella term for all the Japanese rice bowl dishes. They can be meat or vegetables or anything served on top of a big bowl of hot steaming rice. Because of this, some call donburi as sweetened or savory stews on rice.
There had already been a lot of kinds of donburi. One of the more famous is the gyudon, which is beef topped on rice. The one on the photo is katsudon which are breaded deep-fried pork cutlets served on top of rice. Another is the tendon or a Japanese rice bowl with tempura.
