Made of azuki beans or the red mung beans, the amanatto is one of the Japanese sweet snacks made from beans. This Japanese confectionery is made by simmering the red mung beans in sugar syrup, drying and then covering with another layer of sugar. Some use black soybeans or an assortment of different-colored beans for that more appealing look.
This kind of snack was said to have been developed during the Bunkyuu years of Japan, which was around 1861 to 1863. This period was part of the Edo era in Japan.
