Depression and mental illnesses are more than just having a bad day. They are actual disorders that need treatment such as therapy and medicine.
Japan deems suicide as a national problem due to the high number of victims. In 2014, an average of 70 Japanese people were committing suicide per day.
In Japan, depression was not recognized widely until the 1990’s. Today, the stigma is still present. This led to the Yami Kawaii fashion.
Japan is known to have very cute fashion styles. But Yami Kawaii is different, as morbid lines and drawings are often incorporated in cute things. It is actually a statement on how prevalent mental illnesses in Japan are, and how they are disregarded as real.
