Visual kei fashion is a fusion of rock, punk, metal, and contemporary fashion. It was made famous by the Japanese musical movement of the same name. The fashion style rose to fame, together with the music, in the 1980's.
But just like the music, the fashion has evolved through time. While there are no fixed rules to visual kei fashion, most people who portray this style would have shaggy or spiky (sometimes colored) hair. They would also wear gothic/punk-inspired makeup and clothing. There was also a time when gender ambiguities are eminent for men band members sometimes wear Victorian or Lolita outifits.
