Rei Kawakubo is anything but ordinary.
Based in Tokyo and Paris, Rei Kawakubo is a Japanese fashion designer who is responsible for creating iconic brands like Comme des Garçons and Dover Street Market. Rei began her interest in fashion as she enrolled in Keio University to study the history of aesthetics. She worked in a textile company after her graduation, and began as a freelance stylist in 1967. In 1969, she began to design and make her own clothes under the now-iconic label, Comme des Garçons.
Rei Kawakubo is a visionary known for her avant-garde designs. Her pieces are far from what you would consider normal clothing. Instead, the elaborate geometry and vibrant color makes every design a work of art. Instead of being stuck in the same pattern, Rei Kawakubo challenges fashion's conventions by rethinking and recreating it through her out-of-the-box designs. This is what made her fashion's most influential designers. In the MET Gala 2017, her designs were featured in an exhbition entitled, "Rei Kawakubo/Commes des Garçons, Art of the In-Between".
