All Japanese gradeschoolers use the same type of backpack which is called a randoseru.

A randoseru is a firm-sided backpack made up of leather. Traditionally, the randoseru backpacks had two colors as options - red and white. However, today, hundreds of designs can be seen all over Japan. It is now available in so many other colors like green, pink, purple, etc. You can even have one with a cowboy design, a Super Mario design, a floral design and in Nike and Puma styles.

The backpack usually has a price ranging from $80 to $300 depending on the materials used. A randoseru is expected to be sturdy since a child is expected to use the same bag until they reach 6th grade.
