These magnificent pieces of cloths behind these geishas are called the "obi." The obi is a kind of belt or sash worn around keikogis or the Japanese martial arts uniforms, and around kimonos and other traditional costumes. 

Men's obi are usually narrower than that of the women's. The obi is usually made of brocade or silk, or any other high-end and elegant fabrics. The Japanese has also developed around 10 ways of tying this royal sash. The obi knot is called a "musubi."  The taiko musubi is the kind of knot which can be seen by most wearers of the kimono. It is the type that resembles a box or a taiko drum.
