Junya Watanabe is a highly acclaimed Japanese fashion designer known for his 'avant-garde design aesthetic,’ an experimental designer with mastery of both traditional and synthetic materials. Born in Fukushima, he attended the Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo, the alma mater of internationally recognized designers such as Yohji Yamamoto and Kenzō Takada. He was regarded as the protégé of Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo, starting out as an apprentice pattern-maker before opening his own line. As a ‘techno couture’ designer, his designs such as the solar-powered jacket for his FW16 menswear line received attention for being classic and wearable, all while being made out of technical materials.
