Japan was occupied by Americans when World War II ended. This of course, had lasting effects on the different aspects of the Japanese culture -- fashion included.
Today, Japanese people don’t wear kimonos on an everyday basis anymore. The trend nowadays is the Japanese street fashion, which is an interesting mix of colors and styles; some saying even based on Western trends. Subcultures are also popular, which also influence clothing choices. Popular subcultures include: Lolita, a style influenced by the Victorian era of the West; Gyaru, a style focusing on a glam style that makes use of wigs and fake eyelashes; and Kogal, that makes use of the Japanese school uniform, along with loose socks.
