The Tokushima Awa Odori is a big part of the Obon, a Japanese/Buddhist event that commemorates the return of the dead ancestors' souls to earth. During the ceremonies, red lanterns can be seen around the city, as it is believed to guide the spirits to where it needs to be. Also in the celevration are traditional music and dancing, refreshments, and other treats. The festivities will then end after the fireworks and bonfires are lit, which is believed to be the signal that the spirits have returned to their astral homes.
