The residents of Tokamachi City in the mountainous Niigata Prefecture takes advantage of the heavy snowfall to create giant snow sculptures. The abundant snow means enjoyment for visitors and locales. Compared to bigger snow festivals, this one is less-commercialized. The rural ambience gives more glamour to the snow carvings. Usually, free amazake (warm and sweet rice wine) is offered for visitors at various festival sites to counter the cold weather.
