Shan Shan Festival is widely celebrated by the people in Tottori during summer as it is part of the Obon celebration. It is a celebration of the dead while dancing with decorative umbrellas in hand and bells ringing. The name "shan shan" is based on the sound of the ringing bell which is part of the celebration. These small bells are being adorned on the large decorative paper umbrellas which were shaken during the dance. During the performance, the umbrella rotates to form an artificial circular rainbow. All the participants who join this festival wear yukata.
