Nine thousand men wearing fundoshi (loincloths) compete with one another over a pair of small sacred sticks, thrown by the priest four meters above them. Anyone who will get the lucky sticks and thrusts them upright in a rice-filled masu (wooden measuring box), will be called the lucky man, and will be blessed and happy the whole year. One hundred willow bundles are also thrown into the almost-fully naked men. It's also like a rugby game where sticks are snatched in a snap. To add more challenge, at midnight, the lights are turned-off all at once.
