Hiroshima holds this traditional memorial for those who were killed in the bombing on August 6, 1945. The bombing happened when the United States detonated a nuclear weapon in Hiroshima. Almost 166,000 people died during that time. During the ceremony, known as Toro Nagashi, people are releasing floating lanterns in Motoyasu River, upriver of the Hiroshima Peace memorial. These lanterns symbolizes the journey to the afterlife. Photo by Vanvelthem Cédric. Licensed under Creative Commons.
