Dezome Shiki literally means “ceremony of the year’s first excursion”. Dezome Shiki is an annual event held to pray for a safe year. Over 100 fire engines and helicopters participate along with a large-scale firefighting and emergency drills. After the opening parade, a number of performances are being held. The main attraction for this event is the ladder stunts. Circus-like acrobatic stunts on top of bamboo over the heads of the men supporting them are being performed by men dressed as firemen of the Edo Period. It is demonstrated to warn people of the dangers of fire.
