Dai-Chochin festival literally means Dai="Big" Chochin="paper lantern". These giant, colorful chochins were not displayed for nothing; they tell and depict ancient stories, myths and folktales. Way back 450 years, most of people believe that there are evils staying beneath the sea. In order to repel these demons from the sea, the surroundings of Suwa Shrine was illuminated to prevent them from devastating fields and causing serious harm to people. The tradition of keeping evil sprits away, and praying for calm sea and large catch are still passed down to this generation.
