Zao is one of the most famous ski resorts in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture. It is one of only a few places in Japan where juhyo or "ice trees" can be seen. Also known as "snow monsters", the trees take on curious shapes due to the heavy snowfall and freezing winds.
Zao Japan is not just well known for the snow monsters and the skiing, but also as an onsen resort town.
Snow monsters around the peak of the Ski Resort are usually most spectacular around mid February. Access to these snow monsters is provided by a ropeway and a gondola for both skiers and non-skiers.
The resort extends to 15 different slopes and 12 courses, not only experts but also beginners. Visitors can ski from one side of the mountain to another. Servicing these slopes and courses there are 4 gondolas and 35 lifts that can transport for the next destination. At the top of the mountain, you can meet the famous ice monsters.
Visitors can also try the trekking, spring through fall is the best season for trekking. The paths and routes are suitable for all generations to enjoy.
It's a 5-8-minute walk to the north of Onsen Station (Tobu Kinuguwa Line)
Ski Resorts fees varies on the hours that you will spend in the resort.
Season: Early December to early May
Ticket: Full day (8:15 to 17:00) cost 5000 Yen
Half Day - 2 hours cost 2700 yen; 3 hours cost 3300; 4 hours cost 4000 yen and 5 hours cost 4500 Yen.
At night (17:00 to 21:00) cost 2000 yen.
