Yakushuji Castle is one of the Seven Great Temples of Nara, and some of it, including Yakushiji Temple, are designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The title was conferred in Nara's cultural assets including Todaiji, Kofukuji, Kasuga Taisha and Yakushiji on 1998.
The temple exhibits a fine collection of Buddhist art, such as Yakushi Triad, a Sho Kannon and a beautiful painting of Kichijoten (Kisshoten) which is shown only for a week in November.
The construction of the temple was ordered by Emperor Temmu to pray for his Empress from a serious disease. Originally, the temple was located in Fujiwara-kyo, and now stands in Nara.
The large temple complex covers different points of interest such as the Main and Lecture Halls, the west and east Pagoda, and Toindo, which holds the important cultural jewels of Buddhism.
It's 3 minutes away from Kintetsu Nishinokyo Station on foot.
Admission fee starts from 500 Yen, and 800 Yen when the Genjo-Sanzo is open.
