Ujigami Shrine's foundation year is still a mystery until now, and it's believed to be the oldest standing shrine in Japan. Although its construction year hasn't been identified, scholars estimates that the Ujigami Shrine was founded by 1960s.
It was built in the "nagare-zukuri" architectural style, a common design of shrines, where the curved asymmetrical roof stretches out of the side of the main entrance than its opposite part, providing shelter for worshipers.
It's one of the 17 Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1994.
The shrine is close to Byodo-in Temple and the Tale of Genji Museum.
The shrine is accessible from Keihan Uji Station, or JR Uji Station.
The shrine is open from 9:00 to 16:30 all throughout the year. Admission is free.
