Tokei-ji is a small temple and a branch of the Engakuji school within the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism.
The temple was founded by Kakusan-ni, regent Hojo Tokimune's wife in 1285. It has served as a home for woman who suffered from abuse from their spouses, and sought a divorce. It also had been a nunnery, and a temple famous for praying for a good match.
Its head temple Engakuji stands few hundred meters away in the opposite railway tracks from Tokei-ji.
Tokeiji is five minutes on foot from Kita-Kamakura Station (JR Yokosuka Line).
The temple is open all year round from 8:30 to 17:00 (closes 16:00 on Winter). Entry costs 200 yen.
