Tamagusuku Castle is said to be the first castle in Okinawa built by the legendary creator of the Ryukyus, goddess Amamikiyo. The legend says that during the 13th and 14th centuries, the Tamagusuku Lord repaired and expanded the castle. The place is visited as a sacred grove. Tamagusuku Castle was constructed on a limestone hill that is about 700 meters north of Tamagusuku village. It is also called Amachijigusuku This castle is designated a national historic site on August 21, 1987.
Don’t expect grand walls and stairways. Tamagusuku Castle's are really just ruins. A circle shape stone marks the entrance of the castle and offers marvelous scenery. From there, you can see the Philippine Sea. You can stand through and stones and vegetation of Tamagusuku and feel a powerful sense of history.
To get there, you will need to access Highway 331.
