Takachiho Gorge is located in the northwestern part of Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu. The gorge was formed over 100,000 years ago after several volcanic eruption in the nearcy Mount Aso.
The gorge includes several waterfalls and has a 600-meter long walking trail which is a great place in the gorge for sightseeing views of the four seasons; summer, spring, fall and winter.
The natural environment of Takachiho Gorge is considered one of the most beautiful in Japan.
The Takachiho Gorge was designated a National Scenic and Natural Monument in November 10, 1934.
Takachiho Gorge travel would never be complete without trying to ride the boat, it is the best way to appreciate the gorge. Rental boats are available at the south end of the gorge. By riding the boat, visitors will have the chance to view the cliffs and waterfall closer.
Visitors can also walk around the path that runs along the edge of the gorge. Beautiful views from the path is expected along the way and visitors may also look down to the river. The walk will eventually lead to the Takachico Shrine.
With buses being infrequent, the recommended transporation is a rental car. By foot, the gorge is a 30-40-minute walk from the South of Takachico Bus Center.
