Shugakuin Imperial Villa or Shugakain Rikyu's establishment dates back from the 17th century by Emperor Gomizuno. It is now under the management of Imperial Household Agency.
The villa consists of gardens and buildings following the traditional imperial style. It has derived its name from Shugaku temple, which it replaced in the 16th century.
It was built with three villas, namely the lower, middle, and upper villa, as vacation residence for the retired emperor.
The villa has two intricate pavilions: the Rinun-tei, the pavilion near to the clouds, and Kyusui-tei, an elegant tea pavilion.
It is proximate to Manshu-in, a Buddhist temple.
From Kyoto Station, take JR Nara Line to Tofukuji Station and transfer to Keihan Main Line. Get off at Demachiyanagi Station. From there, ride in the Eizan Railways and alight at Shugakuin Station.
The villa gives free tours five times a day, except on Mondays, or the following day if Monday falls on a national holiday.
It is required to book a tour at the Imperial Household Agency's office in Kyoto Imperial Park with your passport. Online reservation is possible, but one must make his reservation several days before the visiting date.
