Shofukuji is one of the oldest Zen temples in Japan.
The temple was founded in 1195 by priest Eisai, the person that introduced Zen Buddhism to Japan from China. The area has been designated as a National Historical Site and a model of Zen Temples. It is located in Fukuoka Prefecture.
The temple complex also contains a Korean-styled bell and belfry, and a huge Sanmon Gate.

People are not allowed to enter any of the establishments in the area, but the grounds sure gives everyone an impressive atmosphere.
The most important gate in the temple is the Sanmon Gate, the large gate standing in front. It was rebuilt in 1911. Behind the Sanmon Gate is the Butsuden Hall, housing small wooden statues of the historical Buddha with a ceiling painting of cloud dragon.
The temple is just a 5-minute walk from the Gion Station.
The temple is always open.
It has no closing days.
The admission is free.
