The Shiraoi Ainu Museum is one of Japan's best museum about Ainu. It is an open air museum located in Hokkaido.
It is widely known as Poroto Kotan that means "big lake village" in the Ainu language. It was opened in 1984 and it was built as a research facility, promotional study and investigation of the culture and folklore of the Ainu society. Now, the museum was subsequently constructed and other facilities were added.
The museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts from the culture of the Ainu which is more than 5,00 Ainu-related artifacts and 250 Ulita, Sami and Inuit artifacts. 800 of them are permamently exhibited.
There is also one structure in the museum that holds an hourly performance related to the traditional Ainu folk dances and songs.
It also has a conventional museum building with an exhibition on Ainu history used for food and medicine. Just outside the gate of the museum, there are also souvenir shops that sells traditional Ainu crafts.
From the JR Shiraoi Station, you can reached the museum by a 13-15 minute walk.
The museum opens at 8:45 to 17:00
It is closed on December 29 to January 5
Admission fee is 800 Yen
