Shinano Art Museum is a prefectural museum, located in Joyama Park, Shinano, Nagano Prefecture. It stages rotating exhibitions of fine arts with different themes, those art works are mostly done by artist who were born in or related to Nagano Prefecture or depict beautiful local scenery.
Just adjacent to the museum, the Higashiyama was built in 1990. It exhibits the works of Higashiyama Kaii, a Japanese artist who was very impressed with the scenery of Nagano and drew many landscape paintings of it.
The museum is consist of two parts; the museum itself which exhibits works by local artist that includes prints, Japanese paintings and sculpture of local craftsmen. There are approximately 3000 art works altogether. Then, the Higashiyama Kaii Gallery, visitors can see Higashiyama's landscapes as well as sketches, maps, paintings and other works.
The exhibition of Japanese paintings is renewed once every two months. Shinano Art Museum and Higashiyama gallery are connected by a road, visitors can go back and forth freely.
Its a 10 minute bus ride from JR Nagano Station. You may also take a train from Naganen Nagano Station to JR Nagano Station and alight at Zenkojishita Station, from where it is a 20 minute walk to the museum.
While walking, you will pass by the Zenkoji Temple and from there its a 5 minute walk northeast of the temple.
-It opens 9:00 to 17:00 and entry is until 16:30 only.
